Jakarta - BRIN Public Relations. Intellectual Property (IP) is closely related to technological development, innovation, and globalisation. IP is the main driver of change in various sectors. Creativity and innovation will become increasingly valuable commodities, which is why the protection of IP is an important concern for all parties. Efforts to determine the value of IP are an important part of the protection of intellectual work. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) together with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, and the World Intellectual Property Organization or WIPO held a Kick Off on the Role of Intellectual Property Valuators in the Utilisation of Research and Innovation Results at Auditorium Gd. BJ Habibie, Jakarta, Monday (11/12).
Intellectual Property (IP) can be defined as intangible assets produced by the human mind, such as copyrights, patents, trademarks, industrial designs and others. In Indonesia, IP as an asset and banking fiduciary has been regulated in Article 16 Paragraph (3) of Law Number 28 of 2014 concerning Copyright, Article 59 Paragraph (3) of Law Number 13 of 2016 concerning Patents, Article 16 of Law Number 24 of 2019 concerning Creative Economy, and Government Regulation Number 24 of 2022 concerning Creative Economy.
However, measuring the value of IP as an effort to protect intellectual works is not an easy task. Often, the calculations carried out do not fully reflect the true potential of these intellectual assets.
Therefore, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), as a research institution that has a lot of contact with IP, held a "Kick Off on the Role of Intellectual Property Valuators in the Utilisation of Research and Innovation Results". This activity was organised in collaboration between BRIN and the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the World Intellectual Property Organization or WIPO.
BRIN Head Laksana Tri Handoko said, this activity was an effort to contribute strategically to BRIN in encouraging national economic growth. According to him, BRIN is not only the spearhead in developing research and innovation in Indonesia, but also the main pillar in sustaining economic progress.
"As we know, Indonesia's current development policy has left natural resource-based development to intellectual property-based development. Economic progress is driven by the promotion of creativity, science and technology so that it is more sustainable," said Handoko.
According to Handoko, natural resources will run out in time. In contrast, creativity and human capabilities will continue to grow over time.
"Through collaboration with research institutions, universities, industry, and the innovation community, BRIN encourages the creation of new knowledge, revolutionary technologies, and innovative solutions that support economic growth," he continued.
According to Handoko, this requires policies in the field of research and funding. For this reason, BRIN plays a role as a catalyst for economic transformation through several strategic steps, namely, first, BRIN initiates and supports relevant and impactful research for key sectors in the national economy, such as agriculture, manufacturing industry, information technology, health, and energy.
"These researches make a significant contribution in improving the competitiveness and efficiency of these sectors," he explained.
Second, BRIN encourages cross-sectoral collaboration between research and industry. Through innovative programmes and strategic partnerships, BRIN facilitates knowledge transfer from research to industry to produce new, highly competitive products and services.
Third, BRIN provides support for the development of innovation-based entrepreneurs and start-up companies. By providing access to resources, training, and research facilities, BRIN helps accelerate the development of innovative startups that have the potential to trigger economic growth.
BRIN's collaboration commitment with the Ministry of Law and Human Rights will continue to be built and manifested in various strategic programmes and activities. Especially in supporting the utilisation of research and innovation results in the form of Intellectual Property to have economic value and be recognised in financing by financial institutions in Indonesia.
From this activity, Handoko hopes that through the valuation of IP, the realisation of economic benefits can be enjoyed by the BRIN community and Inventors in Indonesia which will continue to rotate the innovation cycle. "Let us continue to support BRIN's efforts in encouraging research and innovation that has a real impact on the progress of the national economy. Let us together contribute to creating a brighter future through innovation, creativity, and sustainable collaboration," he concluded.
